Will Groundhog Phil See His Shadow?

Groundhog said to Predict Weather

Each year people anxiously await the Groundhog's prediction of how much longer winter will last.  In the United States, Groundhog day is celebrated on February 2.  Punxsutawney Phil, the official groundhog, lives at Gobbler's Knob near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and attracts over a thousand visitors per year for the events and activities to celebrate the holiday.  Each year news reporters, club members, locals and even visitors meet at Gobbler's Knob to await Phil's appearance and weather prediction.

So where did this idea that a groundhog could predict the weather begin?  Thousands of years ago people in what is now Germany, believed that the badger had the power to predict the coming of spring. They planted their crops based on the actions of the badger.  The tradition continued even after the immigrants settled in Pennsylvania.  Unfortunately, the groundhog had to substitute for the badger as there weren't many in Pennsylvania.  Tradition says that if the groundhog sees its shadow, it will be frightened and will return to its burrow, indicating there will be six more weeks of Winter. However, if he does not see his shadow, it means Spring is on the way!

Many media sources have portrayed the legendary role of the groundhog in pop culture, such as the popular movie "Groundhog Day."  Sometimes the term "Groundhog Day" is used to express the same events or actions occurring repetitively for a period of time.  So whether you plan to take a trip to Pennsylvania and experience all the fun or anxiously wait for the news from your warm, comfy couch, keep your eyes and ears open for the prediction!
